  • A UK school is under fire for providing pregnancy tests to teenage girls (as young as 13). Protesters claim this is sending the message that’s its okay to get knocked up. Just like providing medicine encourages people to get sick. [DailyMail]
  • Scott Roeder, the man who shot and killed abortion doctor George Tiller has been convicted of murder. He took this news graciously by deciding to go on YouTube and rant about how he was totally justified. [KOAMTV]
  • Glenn Beck (do people still like this guy?) creepily talks about how Meghan McCain needs to be ‘sat down and talked to by her daddy’ because grown, independent women should not oppose their father’s views and should just stay in the kitchen making sandwiches. [GlennBeck]
  • Superbowl commercials of 2010 were littered with sexist messages. What else is new? [Jezebel]
  • A 12 (TWELVE!!!) year-old Saudi girl is seeking a divorce from her 80 (EIGHTY!!!) year-old husband. The marriage was arranged by the girl’s father, and a human rights commission is backing the girl’s divorce request. [Newser]
  • Emma Watson is the highest paid actress in Hollywood. Isn’t it refreshing to see a young, independent college woman in Hollywood making headlines that aren’t accompanied by the words ‘cocaine’, ‘crotch shot’ or ‘sex tape’? [VanityFair]
  • In Georgia, an Anti-Abortion group is posting billboards targeted at African-American women which say, “Black Children Are An Endangered Species”. Um, what? [Atlanta Journal]
  • Have I mentioned Sen. Al Franken is my hero? For reals. Check out his Anti-Rape amendment. [Click here!]
  • A 19-year-old man has pleaded guilty to raping an unconsciousness, drunk 15-year-old girl who later died. What part of ‘she’s passed out, don’t put your dick in her, she’s 15’ don’t these guys get? [NBC]
  • Of Obama’s $.3.8 trillion budget, 9 programs are specifically aimed at women. [KansasCity]
  • Tina Fey in Vogue! And she’s talking about feminism! And she looks hot! She’s really an inspiration to the modern woman. Check out the article if you get the chance. [Vogue]

Regarding Emma Watson, I feel like “pregnant” should be added. It seems that once an actress or performer becomes irrelevant, they hold a press conference announcing their bun in the oven.

As for the endangered species status of black children, that guy’s a moron (for oh so many reasons). Statistically, white, middle-class women is the group most likely to seek an abortion primarily because they have the means to pay for it.

And that 19 y/o man raping that girl literally makes me sick.

Uhg I hate that even the most irrelevant people are suddenly given 10 months of press for being pregnant (and more if it out of marriage/in an affair). Then there’s all the press for ‘omg look how fast she lost her weight!’ like anyone gives a shit. And then they’re given a reality TV show. Man.

    Hi Tegan:
I like this! A great round-up of a stories on a particular topic, each one definitely interesting in some way. Is the first time you’ve done a blog post like this? A great diversity of sources and the organization is clear and reads quickly. And stars as bullet points! I know, I’m easily impressed. :)

First time I’ve done it and I hope to keep it up…there’s so many issues I want to write about but don’t have the time/words for all of them so this fulfills me.

You know, I actually have heard some people make the “medicine encourages you to get sick” argument about the health care bill. Like, if your health care is free then you will engage in more unhealthy behavior.

Of course, these people also argued that there is no separation of church state, and that our Founding Fathers intended a government where only Christians could rule (um, what of Article VI then?) I don’t think they’re the smartest.
